Maternity Mystery

I'm having trouble finding a plan that will cover me if I'm pregnant. Is there one out there?

Dear Preggo:
Good question. It differs by state, but most insurance carriers do not cover maternity as part of an individual health plan. (Individual meaning you bought the insurance on your own and not through your employer). Some carriers will offer maternity "riders", but they're usually very expensive and don't cover much.

In Georgia, Kaiser Permanente's individual plans fully cover maternity (with a seperate deductible), and both Golden Rule and Assurant offer riders. Almost all plans cover complications associated with pregancy.

The real question seems to be whether you are "preggo" at all. If you're already pregnant, you're a day late and a dollar short on finding coverage. I guess that would make you "late" on many fronts, huh?
